It is standard practice to give the employer two (2) weeks notice, as in most cases this is enough time for them to find a suitable replacement and ensure that your position is filled during the hiring process. After you give notice, your employer may ask you to quit immediately afterwards, so that you will not be allowed to work for two (2) weeks.
