SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas – In March 2020, the Stimson Library was closed to protect the health and safety of MEDCoE students and faculty from a type of coronavirus now known as COVID-19. However, Stimson Library continues to provide interlibrary loan, documentation services, and reference services to students and staff. Stimson Library staff monitor library inboxes and process requests for items as they arrive. And all of the Stimson Library’s online resources are still available remotely.
Stimson supports more than 30,000 students and many other permanent members associated with the American Center for Medical Excellence (MEDCoE). MEDCoE is the advocate responsible for the education and training of healthcare workers.
Shortly after the library closed, Stimson Library began migrating all of its records to TRADOC’s new University Library System (AULS).
Analysis: University Libraries Are Under Siege
Jodi Quesnell has served as Director of the Stimson Library since January 2019. “Although this has been planned for many months,” Quesnell said, “our staff have been working closely with AULS staff to ensure the transition to AULS is as smooth as possible and has minimal impact on student access to our online eBooks and eBook subscriptions. “The new AULS is timely because it allows students to pre-order printed books online and then pick up books outside the library.
When MEDCoE classes first began, the library provided virtual guidance and supported students in conducting their research projects using the group’s new technology. Quesnell said interlibrary loan and document delivery services will continue. “We continue to purchase new books that have been processed and added to the new AULS online catalog for easy discovery and payment,” she explains.
By October 2020, safety protocols, including perspex and cleaning stations, were in place and the Stimson Library was able to reopen to MEDCoE staff using library computers. “All of our Stimson Library staff have received both COVID vaccines and are able to work without a mask,” Quesnell said. As Health Protection Condition (HPCON) levels gradually improved, the Stimson Library opened its doors to allow students to study in the library, and “we finally allowed students to study in groups; Things got “back to normal,” Quesnell recalls.
By July 2021, the Delta variant was beginning to spread across the region, and JBSA moved the HPCON level from Bravo to Bravo Plus. “Again, everyone is required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status and social distancing,” Quesnell said.
Racine Public Library Renovation 2022
The cleaning procedures introduced in October 2020 are still in effect to minimize the risk of spreading COVID in the library. To facilitate social distancing in the library, the lower floor of the library opened on August 2, 2021. There are 10 more computers on the ground floor, as well as a quiet study room. Four classrooms are available in the lower tier, which can be booked with the new AULS.
“I encourage students who are looking for a good place to come to the Stimson Library,” says Quesnell. The library is extending its opening hours back to pre-COVID times: 0630-2000 Monday to Thursday and 0630-1800 on Friday. She hopes that the new school terms, effective September 7, will increase the availability of Stimson Library’s services and provide students with a place to study, alone or in groups.
“The Stimson Library remains focused on supporting MEDCoE students and faculty,” said Quesnell. “If you have any ideas or suggestions about services or resources that Stimson Library should offer, come on down and let us know!” Please fill out the form below to add a title to our collection. We welcome your suggestion and our staff will review it against the criteria of our collection policy for purchase. Budget constraints limit our ability to purchase all featured titles.
