The goal I set for myself and achieved by changing my mindset was physically evident. Started tour on July 5, 2013 for £402. I lost 187 pounds in 10 months. I’m over 400 pounds and I’m always lazy, angry, frustrated, almost unhappy and in denial about everything. I had trouble breathing when I had to sleep on the cpap machine. This was embarrassing. I was taking high blood pressure medication to add insult to injury.
In September 2008, I lost my mother to complications from breast cancer. Cancer is annoying! I grew up in a single parent family, he was all I had. I had a brother, but he was everything to me. His death put me in a dark place. I thought that a hypertensive attack (at the age of 24, a headache turned into a borderline stroke and I was admitted to the hospital) was the lowest point in my life, but his passing was 100 times less. In 2011, I lost my cousin to a heart attack. He was like an older brother to me. The following year I lost my grandmother. Words cannot describe how much I loved him. I loved them all. Their passing opened my eyes. In one way or another, they were all related to life.
Life goes on once you get through it, whether you like it or not. After my mother died, I had to work 12-hour shifts as a manager again. Home loans are permanent. Debts still had to be paid. I had to work as a leader and leave to take care of my family. I have been working in the food industry since I was 16 years old. I have always been interested in food. When my family died, my grief was drowned in food. Access to it was easily reached by arm.
I had to be honest with myself. I had to change my diet and change my thinking. I was out of control. No one is responsible but me! I had to own it! I knew I had to go on this trip alone. I couldn’t rely on someone to do the work for me. For years I was eating, I didn’t know what I was eating. I’m a Midwesterner who eats meat and potatoes, corn and bread. I tried to add vegetables here and there, but most of them were my food. I have a sweet tooth! I love cakes, cookies, brownies, and all kinds of fresh sweets. I should have had it. I don’t blame anyone for my actions. This is what you should do. Manage what you do, learn and grow.

I was inspired by watching a few films about juice detox and the diet/supply industry. I have seen amazing weight loss changes as these people educate themselves and reduce their diet. No drugs, no pills, no quick fixes (at least from what I’ve seen). I have realized that their problems need a change. The mental clarity and increased energy during and after the weight loss process was something I dreamed of.
I began to see everything differently. I looked at what I was eating. The ‘way’ I had been eating for the past 30 years was out of control. Another great thing I learned from my research was that everyone taught themselves what they ate. Now when I say “what were they eating” I mean I never thought about it before. What do I eat, where does it come from? How was it raised? How did you grow up? What are you eating? I never had this thought in my head before. I was always told that meat has hormones and steroids that make us big, but I didn’t take it seriously. Pesticides and the new term I learned about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are fraught with problems throughout our agricultural sector.
I learned why I had to eat and after an hour or so I felt the need to eat more. It was a feeling of never being ‘satisfied’. My body craved more. At the time I didn’t know what it was. Ignorance made me go back to the fridge. Lack of adequate vitamins and nutrients. This is what my body craved.
After several months of researching how to change, I decided to go on a natural diet. July 5, 2013 was the first day of my fast. I was 31 years old, 6 feet 3,402 pounds! I wanted to see if I had the energy to last a year with proper diet and exercise. I gave up refined sugar and processed foods. Freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, all natural smoothies, herbal teas, soups and healthy meals.

Being honest with myself gave me the strength to see this journey through to the end. Lose 80kg in 2 months of fasting! I consumed only liquids, tea and smoothies for the first 80lbs. Nothing solid. It was a step I had to challenge myself. I never dreamed that I would lose weight so quickly. I have never felt better in my life. I was losing weight every day. I stuck to what worked, and it worked. There were hard days, but I persevered. The results encouraged me. Going to the gym every day finally makes sense. I always had a diet along with exercise to give me the results I wanted. I have increased energy, mental clarity and, above all, I am not always angry. It’s been two months since I’ve been showing off the junk, obviously I’ve missed out! I knew my work was not over. About two weeks later I shut myself down for another fast. Do 10-20 lbs at a time and return to the air. We continued this process until we reached our May 2014 goal of 215 lbs. Now there is no turning back. This is a lifestyle change.
The real challenge is keeping the weight off. I changed from a 5XL shirt to a medium. Size 52 waist to size 32/34 waist. I wear size 15 shoes. I lost the first 100 pounds and my feet are still swollen. I wear size 14 shoes now! It was unexpected. These results make me not want to go back to what I was. One of my biggest accomplishments so far has been running six miles. The longest I’ve run before was a mile on the treadmill. I weighed 400lbs and felt like running away. I thought I was going to cough up my lungs, lol.

I never thought that weight loss could inspire so many people. I was interested and I did not shrink. I lost weight myself. It sounds better than anything I’ve ever heard in my life. No more anger, high blood pressure pills or sleep apnea. My outlook on life is more love, affirmation and encouragement to myself and others.
