The Towns came out strong in the first set, beating a Portland lineup that started a non-league game with its top players still on the sidelines.

Sierra Canyon took the lead once 6-foot-3 Pittsburgh’s Olivia Babcock and other first-team players entered the second set. Babcock kills for a 5-1 lead, prompting the Tier 1 Trail Blazers to beat the Tier 4 Don Richards Gym 15-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-12 in the J.R.

“I’m glad we played Sierra Canyon. We know they’re going to be strong and we’re working on it,” said Santa Barbara coach Kirsten Hempy, who led the Dons to the CIF-SS Division 6 championship last season. They showed up. Of course they are very powerful. Amazing blocking and their batsmen, some of them just reached and passed us. Her height is unbelievable. Her setter is really, really talented.

But Downs took it to Sierra Canyon until Babcock came in and started to unleash a devastating blow. Her batting and blocking gave the team a huge boost.

“We knew it was going to look like that,” Hempy said. “I’m really proud of us. We had some good touches and our mid lane worked. Obviously we still have some work to do in certain areas, but I’m for all the work, all the effort and what we’re doing in Proud of everything that was done there tonight.”

Amy Werner led Santa Barbara to a 6-3 lead in the first set with three consecutive serving aces.

A Nicole Schuetz kill and solo block in the middle sparked a 5-1 run that extended the Dons’ lead to 15-10.
