As the competition for college applicants continues to increase, writing an effective and honest college recommendation letter is one way high school teachers can help students stand out from the competition. Every year I write recommendations for dozens of students, often to the most prestigious universities in the country. Here are some things I learned along the way:

In fact, many teachers require students to quickly submit a resume before drafting a cover letter! You can use this information to complete more personal stories. However, if you find that you don’t really have any personal information to add, you may want to consider whether you are the right person to write this student’s recommendation.

If I feel that I don’t know a student well enough or feel comfortable recommending them for another reason, I just politely decline the request. I usually tell these students to ask the teacher who knows them better.

Sometimes the former relates the character to academics and the latter to extracurricular activities. Other times I use student characteristics as the main focal points. Colleges look for how a student goes beyond the normal school experience.

Conclude with a sincere recommendation to the student for the college of their choice. When submitting a recommendation for a single college, use the college’s name or mascot in the recommendation. If you have knowledge of the particular college, say why you think the student is a good fit.

For a recommendation that will be used for multiple applications, such as the Common App, omit specific references.

Tip: I used the student’s full name again in my last reference to him in the letter.
