Basketball Play Sheet Template – I get at least one email a week, a lot more in the summer. I would like an example from my game day game sheet; That’s why I thought I’d put it here.

Play Sheets, Play Call Sheets, Game Day Cards, whatever you call them, they are very personal. You have to find what works for you. When I became the first head coach, I continued to use what my mentor told me. It took me a game to say “This doesn’t work for me”. And then it took me about 3 years to REALLY like what I was using. I went through several different formats in the first three years. I probably used 6-7 varieties.

Simplifying Your Basketball Practice Planning

I use four 8.5 x 11 sheets. They overlap, so I laminate the two layers twice in a row. Is it confusing for you? Now reading is for me! We hope you can get an idea when you see the pictures below. I love putting them together because it means it’s GAME DAY!

I did one for my last walk for my Thursday workout, but usually it’s just great, writing a bunch of stuff on it, sometimes making last minute personnel changes, etc. . I make them myself. Once a student tried to hand it to an intern football player and he held it up. He tried to get the secretary to do it once and she freaked out. Like many of you, I am one of those guys who MUST be PERFECT at certain things! My playing card is one of them.

Front has: my offense (I’ve been in HC 7 for 8 years), this week’s script (first 10-12 games), pregame schedule, kids wristband card, officials’ names, timeout counter, ideas this week, specials/cheats, captain’s tricks.

Obviously, this is going to be the biggest episode. Again, it took a few years to find what I REALLY liked about the attack design. I agreed to it. Now this playbook is ALL about the playbook. I’m not going to play that much for every game. I wanted to show you what this thing looks like during Boot Camp.

For this section I decided to use the “down/distance” method. To be honest, the coaching staff thinks long and hard about which games go where. How about a third and long run – BAM! Now some guys have it all in their heads and don’t use the game card: they support the coaches who do. I’ve learned to make it easier over the years. I know I could guide the game without this map, but honestly I’d feel so naked without it!! It has become a habit now. I just like to be very organized and this helps me do that.

Red games RUN, blues PASS. This helps to identify them quickly. Our wristband is almost ALL game. So you will see a number next to each game on the game card. This allowed us to get into our event where we didn’t encounter any of our offense at any point, “the pace was great!” I’ve been using my “strike/freeze” non-merger mix since 2003, my first year as a HC.

Honestly, it’s really important to have your script on your playing card! Trust me! When I first started scripting in 2005, I think it was because I didn’t put my script on the game card! Moron! We’re playing the first game and I said, “Let’s skip the script, guys, let’s go.” They knew the first three games, none of us remembered the fourth! What a waste of time. Honestly, I’ll put the script in there!

As an assistant, I’ve always hated being on a desk in the locker room before a game, outside of the pregame schedule, not knowing how much time I have. I think this pre-game program definitely needs to be on your card for everyone to agree. All my coaches get a game card, even the defensive players because they wear special suits.

This week’s episode is just what it sounds like: games we’ve featured this week OR games we absolutely loved this week. It’s just a place to remind our offensive staff to come back this week for the plays we think are going to be great.

Another hard lesson I learned when I started using wrist bands my first year as head coach!!! (I blame it on my 27th!)  During training, I used the wristband most of the week to look up games and not chat! But I never put this bracelet on my game card and I forgot the class of my bracelet. The next game I wore the bracelet, but then I looked at both my playing card and the bracelet. In the third game, I immediately put the wristband information on the game card, it’s a no brainer!

In the upper right corner you can see I have a W and an S. Next to the W you can see the name PETE. That means Pete is a white hat. S stands for S’s man, who I talk to the most by my side. I used to write their names on my cards but then one night I forgot and then I remember writing them W and S when I met them.

Helpful Hint: During our pregame we always ask the powers that be, “What do you want me to tell you tonight?” I ask. They really, really like it when you ask them. Some guys just want to be called “Sir”, others just want to be called “Mr.” It’s official,” but most want to be called by name.

In the upper right corner, you will see My Timeout. It helps me keep track of timeouts. “How many recesses are left? ” or “How much expiration is there?” There’s no reason not to know exactly. Having this chart helps.

We can all vomit out our captains’ tricks pretty easily. I love that they write here just to interview the powers that be. They always want to know who the captains are. I usually change 1 captain every week, honorary captain. This helps me list 4 guys without having to try to remember specifics at the beginning of the season.
