Sugar Skull Template - Happy Witching Season! I'm Ashley and I blog at My Craftily Ever After. I love making easy DIY projects, easy semi-homemade recipes, and fun printables! Today I'm here at See Vanessa Craft to share these printable sugar skull masks. I love all things Halloween and have recently become very interested in DIa de los Muertos. One aspect of this Mexican celebration is the creation of sugar skulls. I wanted an easy way to share this beautiful art form with my kids and readers, so I decided to come up with a few different mask options.
Today I have four printables in black and white for you to color yourself. Download HERE.

Regardless of which one you choose, the instructions are the same. Print the mask of your choice on thick cardboard. This will help prevent it from tearing when worn as a mask. Once it's printed, you'll need to cut out the outer edges until just the skull remains. If you plan on wearing this mask, you'll also need to cut out the eyes (you know, so you can see).

I added a black tab to each side of the mask so you don't have to worry about ruining the design while making the mask. You will need to drill a hole through each of these black tabs. Next, cut the ribbon, twine, or whatever material you need to attach to the face.
If you're not too excited about the idea of wearing a mask, you can always leave the eyes glued on and stick the bottom part to a popsicle stick and hold it up like a masquerade mask in front of your face.
It would also make a great decoration for your Halloween display and an unexpected addition to any traditional skeleton.
Welcome to See Vanessa Craft! I'm Vanessa, an MSSW and mom of two in Arizona, and I'm glad you're here to be inspired with me. My mission in life is to spread creativity through crafts, recipes, travel and more to live a life well lived. This week I made a sugar skull stencil to decorate a pumpkin. The sugar skull design is used in Mexico's Day of the Dead celebration, as it is a time to honor the lives of loved ones who have died. It's traditionally a fun holiday, and one way to show respect is to offer sugar cookies, also known as

And originally meant "holy evening" and was a time to honor the dead. Although these customs come from different times and places, they are also similar, which is why I was inspired to use a sugar skull design to carve pumpkins. Watch the short video below to see how you can do it too.
Thanks to TheDigitalArtist, I saved this image of a sugar skull from Pixabay. It is free for commercial use and is purple in color with stars. I opened it in the free Picture Stencil Maker and edited it for black and white printing to create a pumpkin carving stencil. You can save and use any of these versions as you wish.
I then cut off the top of my pumpkin, cleaned it up and taped the sugar skull print to the pumpkin with packing tape. The most common way to transfer the design to the pumpkin is to hold it on your lap and poke holes closely around the shape in the template. If you're using a pumpkin carving kit, it most likely came with holes. Otherwise, you can use a regular pin or pencil to punch holes.
There are a lot of shapes and details in this pattern, so you may want to only punch out the main shapes that you really want to cut out. Keep a copy of the pattern close to you so you can find smaller details that can be drawn with a marker and cut out after you cut out the main design.

I used a knife and pumpkin carving tools to cut some shapes all the way around the pumpkin. I then used a vegetable scraper to connect the dots and carve out the rest of the shapes deep enough to show the design. You can also use linocut or wood carving tools to carve just the surface of the pumpkin if the blades are slightly curved.
I also decorated the white pumpkin with a sugar skull design using permanent markers instead of carving the design. I used a simpler template that you can download for free here. If you're a paid Rapid Resizer subscriber, you can also print any of these templates on multiple pages to decorate larger pumpkins or make other decorations.
Begin by carefully adhering the carbon paper to the pumpkin masking or tape. Try to only touch the carbon paper where necessary, as it will leave a mark on the pumpkin. A stronger tape will be harder to separate and may leave more marks. Then glue the template on it.
Helpful Hint: Using carbon paper to transfer the design will also come in handy if you're carving a pumpkin if you're not a fan of the punch method. After removing the stencil, you can use a toothbrush and soapy water to remove excess carbon.

Also, if you only have an orange pumpkin, you can paint the area you plan to stencil with white acrylic paint.
Draw the shapes of the sugar skull with a pencil or crayon. Then remove the stencil and carbon paper, trace the carbon lines with a permanent marker and fill in the design with the colors you want!
