Sugar skull designs are used in the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, as this is a time to honor the lives of those who have passed. It's always fun to celebrate and one way to show appreciation is to decorate cookies with skulls, or as it's called.

And it originally means 'holy day' and is also a time to respect those who have died. Although these customs come from different times and places, they are the same ones that inspired me to use a sugar skull design to carve the pumpkin. I picked up this image of a sugar skull from Pixabay thanks to TheDigitalArtist. It is free for commercial use and is full of stars. I opened it in Free Photo Stencil Maker and adjusted it to print in black and white to create a pumpkin stencil. You can save and use either of these templates as you wish.

Then I cut off the top of my pumpkin, washed it out, and attached the skull print to the pumpkin with tape. The best way to change the design for the pumpkin is to hold it in your chin and peel the edges together around the stencil. If you use a pumpkin carving kit it will come with a hole punching tool. Otherwise, you can use a regular chart or pen to fill in the hole.

Paper Day Of The Dead Luminaries

There are a lot of shapes and details in this stencil, so you'll want to punch holes only around the main shape you know for sure you want to draw. Keep a copy of the stencil close by as a guide for fine details that can be drawn with a marker and cut out after the main design is removed.

I cut several shapes all the way through the pumpkin with a knife and pumpkin carving tools. Then I used the lid of the vegetable colander to connect the dots and carved other shapes deep enough to show the design. You can use a linocut tool or a wood carving tool to carve the pieces. tools.

I also decorated a white pumpkin with a sugar skull design using permanent markers instead of drawing. I used a simpler stencil that you can download for free here. If you're a fast Resizer user, you can print one of the stencils over multiple pages to decorate pumpkins or make other decorations.

Begin by carefully placing the carbon paper on the pumpkin with masking tape or masking tape. Try to touch the carbon paper only if necessary as it will leave the pumpkin. Stronger adhesives will be more difficult to peel and may become larger. Then drag the stencil to it.

Useful tip: you will also work using carbon paper to change the design if you are carving a pumpkin if you are not a fan of the punch method. You can use a toothbrush and soapy water to scrub off the remaining carbon after you remove the stencil.

Also, if you only have an orange pumpkin you can paint the area where you plan to stencil with white acrylic paint.

Use a pen or pencil to trace the shape of the head stencil. Then remove the stencil and carbon and cross the carbon lines with a permanent marker and fill in the design with your favorite color!
