Pumpkins & Power Drills: 10 Creative Jack O' Lantern Ideas

Last year we realized that carving whole pumpkins with a power drill is not only a beautiful and creative way to decorate pumpkins, but it's also super simple and makes working with these chunky varieties so much easier.

I believe the pumpkin carving process is pretty standard, but today I'll share how we go about it:

Gently peel the pumpkin by making a circular cut around the stem with a sharp knife. Peel the pumpkin and thoroughly clean the inside of the pumpkin. This is a great opportunity to save the seeds from your pumpkin and extra "meat" to add to the recipe later.

I'm pretty laid back about most things, and I'm a fan of very clean and thin-walled inner pumpkins. One way I get a really clean look is to use a fruit scooper to literally scrape the strips of pumpkins off the inside walls once all the guts and seeds have been removed. It allows for easy carving, a clean look, and I feel like I'm using every last bit of pumpkin goodness later.

Halloween Fun: Fast & Easy Way To Create Halloween Pumpkins

Once the pumpkin is thoroughly cleaned and prepared, it's time to get down to business. When drilling the planned design, it's a good idea to mark your pumpkin in each area where a hole should go. I used a sharpie marker to make sure the ink didn't bleed. Tip: It's super easy to clean up any mistakes with a little nail polish remover - the marker will disappear, leaving the outside of your pumpkin intact.

Once you're happy with your design marked up, get a power drill! You can use different sized drill bits to achieve variation in hole sizes in your design. When in doubt, use a larger size drill bit, as smaller sizes are harder to light when lit. Place the drill bit on the side of the pumpkin in your marked areas and drill all the way into the pumpkin. Repeat as needed.

I should note that it's a good idea to drill outside as little pieces of pumpkin will fly everywhere - Tim was in charge of drilling 17 spaces here.

Clean the inside of the pumpkin and wipe inside and out with a damp cloth so that every hole is clean and clear. At this point, you're ready to test your new jack-o-lantern! We like to put 2-3 teaspoons of light on the bottom of each pumpkin.
